Why Ducks? The Idea Behind Duck Operatives

Duck Operatives started with a simple idea: take something deeply familiar to the cybersecurity world and turn it into something tangible, collectible, and fun.

The series is heavily inspired by the founder’s own work in cybersecurity, as well as the culture that has grown around hacking, security research, threat hunting, and defending systems.

And somehow, ducks have become a surprisingly important part of that culture.

For developers, engineers, analysts, and hackers, rubber duck debugging has been around for decades. When you’re stuck on a problem, you explain it step-by-step to a rubber duck. More often than not, simply forcing yourself to describe the problem helps you figure out what you were missing.

Over time, the rubber duck has become more than a debugging tool. Ducks can be found on desks, in security labs, at conferences, and throughout technical communities. Cybersecurity in particular has embraced the imagery, making the duck an almost unofficial symbol of curiosity, experimentation, problem solving, and hacker culture.

That history is a big part of the inspiration behind Duck Operatives.

The goal of the series is to take those ideas and reinterpret them through original characters inspired by the people, personalities, and culture found throughout cybersecurity.

The designs are also created with physical production in mind. Each character begins as a digital concept, but ultimately needs to work as a real 3D-printed collectible, so the shapes, details, and overall design are kept intentionally clean and practical.

And the first Operative is almost ready.

We’ll be launching soon, with our first duck arriving in the coming days. Its design is heavily inspired by the classic old-school hacker aesthetic: hoodie up, computer nearby, and a little bit of that mysterious hacker energy that helped define the image of cybersecurity for a generation.
